Roundabout at 26th Street and Washington Ave.- Enhanced Pedestrian Crossing Study (Phase I & II) Santa Monica, California
The City of Santa Monica established enhancement of pedestrian circulation city wide as their number one goal. KOA led a multi-disciplinary team in the development of a plan for enhancement of pedestrian mobility along ten major corridors in the City of Santa Monica. The project team included an Architect / Urban Planner, a Landscape Architect, and two pedestrian mobility specialists. The project addressed substantial community concerns over pedestrian safety and mobility. The project team achieved a consensus for various pedestrian circulation improvements through a series of public workshops and meetings.

Recommended improvements include Santa Monica’s first roundabout, at the intersection at 26th Street and Washington Ave., an innovative "in-ground" crosswalk flasher warning system at ten locations, curb extensions, aggressive markings at all uncontrolled crosswalks, median refuges, and a variety of other pedestrian friendly treatments. The various measures have been designed and constructed along most of the corridors, including Wilshire Boulevard (medians), Santa Monica Boulevard (in-pavement flashers,) Montana Street (curb extensions &medians), and 26th Street (medians and a roundabout). The project has greatly removed barriers to safe and comfortable pedestrian travel in many areas of the City.

CBM Consulting, prior to joining KOA, managed the construction of the project, including the installation of the roundabout located at the busy intersection of 26th Street and Washington Ave., street repavement, installation of curb extensions and landscaped medians on Wilshire Blvd. and Broadway, and new striping. The project had a number of challenging ADA design configurations, which were resolved by using innovative implementation.
