City of Long Beach Short Range Bicycle Program Administration, Long Beach, California
It is the vision of the City of Long Beach to be one California’s leading bicycle-friendly communities. KOA has served in many key roles in the planning and implementation of the program, which includes the design of many innovative bikeway applications. The program will provide for a complete network of bikeways city-wide, bicycle boulevards that feature protected crossings at major intersections, elimination of unnecessary stop signs at lesser streets, and traffic calming features to produce positive benefits for automobile traffic.

KOA has obtained two authorizations from the Federal Highway Administration to use experimental traffic control devices to assist the City of Long Beach in implementation of innovative bikeway treatments. Our firm is currently providing justification, background information, and design for a protected bikeway facility to be constructed in downtown Long Beach. The project is modeled after a unique application on 9th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. The other experiment allows for use of green painted pavement treatment, called a “sharrow”, and a variant of the Share the Road sign along Second Street, the main street for the City’s vibrant Belmont Shore retail and entertainment community.  The green shared lane has been implemented.
