Eco-Bikeway Design and Traffic Calming Project, Imperial Beach, California
In an effort to connect to the existing Bayshore Bikeway from San Diego Bay to the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and other tourist generators, the City of Imperial Beach developed an eco-bikeway using existing city streets. KOA was hired to update the City's entire Bicycle Transportation Plan (BTP) and create construction drawings for portions of the planned bikeway. The project applied a "road diet" treatment to provide one lane in each direction along Palm Avenue to create a parking lane and a new bike lane. To do this, curb pop-outs were planned at the main intersections in the project area, and new signing and striping was required.
